How Does Gift Aid Work?

Gift Aid is a special program in the UK that helps charities get more money when people donate. Here's how it works:

  1. To use Gift Aid, you need to be a UK taxpayer and have paid at least as much tax as the charity will claim on your donation.

  2. You give money or other things of value to a registered charity or sports club.

  3. You fill out a form called a Gift Aid declaration. This form confirms that you qualify for Gift Aid and gives permission for the charity to claim it.

  4. The charity claims back the basic rate of income tax (which is 20%) on your donation from the government. This means for every £1 you donate, the charity gets an extra 25 pence. So your £1 donation becomes £1.25.

  5. The charity sends their claim to the government. They check if everything is correct, and if it is, they pay the charity the extra money.

  6. Gift Aid gives more money to charities, so they can do their important work better. They can support projects, help people, and make a bigger difference.

Remember, Gift Aid only applies to certain donations and doesn't cover everything. It's a great way to help charities and make your donations go further.
